About the Host
A 4th-generation artisan from Longpi village, Master Shimray has trained over 100 apprentice potters in the ancient technique of moulding weathered serpentine rock without a wheel.
"Longpi pottery (Loree Ham) is older than recorded history in our mountains. We do not use electric or foot-powered wheels. We pound black river clay and pulverized green serpentine rock from our sacred quarry, blend them by hand, shape vessels using wooden mallets, and burnish them with fresh wild Machi leaves. When travelers sit on my veranda and shape their own mug from mountain rock, they touch the heart of Tangkhul heritage."
